You Have Two Options...

There will be a time when you are faced with two options.


You can either face the discomfort head on.

Or you can run away from it and return to watching porn.


I used to think this discomfort was to do with failing in life and about who I was deep down.

But, now I have learned from my own experience and that of my clients that the discomfort comes from being in withdrawal. The APOTM bombards you with thoughts like "once won't hurt", "everyone does it", and "this will be the last time". The APOTM desperately wants you to engage in your compulsive behaviour and will try anything it can. It wants temporary relief from the discomfort of withdrawal.


And then if you go ahead and relapse, you are likely to feel awful...


But the APOTM will jump in and rationalise your choice. The APOTM will come in with explanations to justify what you chose to do.


Thoughts like "you were very tired", "you were really stressed out" or "you got triggered" come along to justify a destructive decision you made for yourself.


You may have self-compassion for yourself and start to feel motivated about going on a fresh "streak". But, then the cycle goes on, and on, and on. People stay trapped in this cycle for decades.


Unless you have a tool to think through your choice rationally, with a solid process, you are going to be swept away by temporary discomfort, and let the APOTM make choices for you.


Life can be challenging, but it is how we respond that matters.
