Why I Stopped Consuming Information on Addiction Recovery
Last night, on our BCA group call, one of our clients talked about how he had spent 1,000's of hours consuming self-improvement content in an attempt to stop watching porn.
Once he learned the Beyond Compulsion method and started applying it, he realised that self-improvement was not helping him overcome his porn addiction.
The reason for this is that even though he could learn all kinds of things about himself, learn about meditation, exercise, nutrition - there would still be the inevitable moment of compulsive desire. Up until learning the BC method, he did not know how to effectively deal with that moment.
In addition to being a BCA member, he now has a life coach. But, the tracks in his mind that used to connect self-improvement with porn addiction are no longer there. Through working with us, he has disconnected that connection between making general improvements in life and overcoming a porn addiction. Our clients are trained on dealing with the addicted part of the mind (APOTM) so that in the exact moment of compulsive desire — they can face their mind and think through their choice rationally. Just like our BCA clients, I have learned that porn addiction and self-improvement are separate topics.
Getting into self-improvement is great. But, if someone fails to ever address the addictive thinking present in the moment of compulsive desire, then it is likely their self-improvement efforts will be blurred by the muddy waters of staying in addiction.
