A diagnosis won't help you

Some guys who struggle with porn will say to me things like "I don't know, maybe I have OCD or ADHD or something?"

But, the key thing is that no matter what diagnosis you may or may not have - you never have to watch porn. Even if you did a have a "disorder" of some kind, there is no way that your brain can force you into engaging in a compulsive behaviour. The great thing about humans is that we have the ability to make rational choices and change our brains ourselves through changing how we think.

Unfortunately, a lot of society nowadays stay stuck in a fixed mindset believing that sticking a label on people will help. But, a lot of the time it actually does more harm than good - especially for those wishing to overcome a compulsive behaviour. This is a controversial perspective to take, but if I hadn't have learned the Beyond Compulsion method from Mari Paulus, I am certain I'd have gotten an ADHD diagnosis by now. Learn more about why labels like ADHD and OCD can do more harm than good when you're trying to overcome an addiction in our latest podcast episode.
