How to live well in an insane society

When I was in a porn addiction I also had a number of "bad habits".

I'd overeat. If I cooked a dish like lasagne, pasta bake or enchiladas instead of eating a reasonable amount and leaving the rest for the following days, I'd finish the rest. The junkie thought was "it tastes better when it is fresh and hot".

I'd spend hours each day on social media. I would scroll on Facebook and Twitter, seeking out something to excite me. I remember clicking into different Twitter accounts in a gamified search of finding something sexual.

The junkie thought was "it is fine if I see something sexual by accident".

I wasted countless hours of my one and only life. I spent days and days... years and years filled with compulsive desire and distracted from reality.

Nowadays, these sort of behaviours are normal for a lot of people. They may not be these exact examples. But, the amount of people who live their lives way below their potential, stuck in a cycle of compulsivity is insane. And people are being diagnosed with an absolute plethora of disorders. However, I truly believe that each and every one of us can live pretty well in our crazy modern society by simply choosing to reject what is now normal.

And instead, making choices that align with our values, moment by moment.

I am happy. I am content. And this happiness doesn't come from anything outside of myself. It simply comes from me choosing to make choices I am proud of in the present moment. Every week inside of the Beyond Compulsion Academy we share our weekly wins. Below is a great example of how a client is enjoying his life without living an extravagant life, and whilst some bad things have come his way.

Weekly win from a client sharing how his life has been great despite much good actually happening

Straight line living is simple. Moment by moment, we make choices which serve us and get to experience true happiness and joy. If a desire to engage in a compulsive behaviour comes up, we'd think it through using a script. Making choices that sit well with me has changed my life and has helped me realise how I need much less than I think in life.

Contentment is king.
