Freed from Desire

Writer: Tom MolyneuxTom Molyneux

During the Euros and World Cups, there has been a few times where Gala's "Freed from desire" has blasted from the speakers of a bar and the floor of the place would start bouncing with the trainers of football fans. Beer would spill from the pints in the hands of those who had transformed "Freed from desire" into a football chant.

In the past, I'd be one of the guys bouncing, often with a big group of mates. Nothing wrong with that. But, I had never acknowledged the actual lyrics of this song.

A few years later and funnily enough, I've realised that no song resonates with my life more than this one.

Freed from desire. It is possible.

But, not if you choose to skirt around the real problem. The real problem is compulsive desire and to change compulsive desire, it is essential to get connected to it and think it through.

Unfortunately, most addiction recovery groups and support encourages the opposite.

Blockers, removal of triggers, and the endless task of staying busy and dealing with emotions. And as such, the real problem never truly goes away. People just get a little better at managing and controlling the addiction, before inevitably cascading back down into the depths of their compulsive behaviour. The real goal should be to become "Freed from desire, mind and senses purified".
