Admitting Powerlessness?

Yesterday, someone got in touch with me who didn't feel he was addicted to porn, but felt like it was a real problem in his life. I have been exactly there myself. I get it. There can be a lot of unhelpful stigma around "porn addiction" and many misconceptions too. What I'd like to share is that it actually doesn't matter all that much whether you call it an addiction or not. However, what does matter, at least if you want to improve your life, is that you take the problem seriously and work to find a solution that you can use to solve this issue for good. The first step of the 12 Step process to overcoming addiction is acceptance.
Acceptance is good and important.
However, there is a big difference between the 12 step approach and the Beyond Compulsion method approach. In 12 steps, the step of acceptance is about admitting powerlessness over the substance. With the Beyond Compulsion method, we accept the behaviour is a problem and that we will want to engage in the behaviour, but that we have a choice and we have power over the substance. It is a big shift, but a key one if you want to actually be free.
Whether you call your problem with porn an addiction or not is up to you.
We focus on helping people stop engaging in their compulsive behaviours by thinking through their choice rationally in the moment of compulsive desire.
